Eating in the Car Without the Mess

Lunch in a parking lot between jobs, dinner at a rest stop, snacks for the kids somewhere past the state line. The car is a dining room more often than we admit.

A few habits and the right parts keep the seats clean and the cabin smelling like a car, not last week's fries.

  1. Give food a surface

A laptop or a lap is a wobbly table. A cup holder tray gives you a flat, steady surface that swings away when you're done.

  2. Keep the drink separate

Put the drink in a holder, not on the tray. A tipped cup is the most common mess.

  3. Bag it right away

Wrappers go into a lidded bin the second you're done, before they slide under a seat.

  4. Two bins, not one

One up front and one in the back row. Kids won't pass trash forward.

  5. Wipe and rinse

Hard plastic trays and bins rinse off at home in a minute. Do it weekly, not when it smells.

Eat only while parked, keep the driver's hands on the wheel, and the rest is easy.
